Argento’s conductors are made from 99.9999% (“six-nines”) pure silver, which contains no more than about one part per million of other elements. Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of any metal, about 5–7% higher than copper. At the microscopic level, drawn metal is made of many small crystals, or grains, and impurities and oxides tend to gather at the boundaries between them. Argento uses a slow, controlled casting process, similar to Ohno Continuous Casting (OCC), to make silver with greatly elongated grains. A signal therefore crosses far fewer grain boundaries over the length of the cable. Combining high purity with this extended crystal structure is meant to keep the conductor as uniform as possible, so the cable passes the audio signal with as little change as possible.
A speaker cable carrying a signal is subject to mechanical vibration. Some comes from the magnetic forces between conductors carrying current, and some comes from the speakers, floor and room. Conventional cables surround their conductors with solid polymer insulation such as PVC, polyethylene or PTFE. Air-dielectric designs instead hold the conductors loosely in tubes or spacers. Both approaches can let the conductors and insulation resonate at their natural frequencies. Argento’s VDM is a proprietary damping compound applied around the conductors to absorb this energy and dissipate it as heat. The goal is to reduce microphonic effects, where physical vibration turns into small amounts of electrical noise, which Argento associates with coloration and harshness in the high frequencies.
